A general term for fish belonging to the Bothidae family of the Pleuronectiformes order, or one of these species. Approximately 30 species live in Japan, and are mostly found in the central and southern parts of the country. Taxonomically, they are more closely related to the Bothidae family than to the Pleuronectidae family. They are named after their rounded overall shape. The pelvic and pectoral fins have branched soft rays, and the lateral line on the eyeless side is not developed. Many species become large larvae around the time of metamorphosis, and in the juvenile stage, the base of the pelvic fin on the left side of the body extends and becomes longer than that on the right side, and the front end of the dorsal fin reaches forward beyond the eye.
