Japanese: 大岳[温泉] - おおたけ

A hot spring located in the upper reaches of the Kusu River in western Oita Prefecture. Simple spring water, 84°C. Before Kyushu Electric Power's geothermal power plant was opened, there was a small hot spring inn here, steam rose from the nearby Odake Jigoku, and the hot spring water was used to make hot spring water nursery for the Handa Plateau area in the nearby rice fields, making the area bustling in season. Shortly after World War II, the area became a candidate site for a geothermal power plant, and in 1967 Kyushu's first geothermal power plant (output 12,500 kW) began operation. The plant uses hot water that gushes out from deep underground to power a generator, and the steam from the hot water is used to heat water, which is then distributed to nearby homes for bathing and other purposes.

大分県西部，玖珠（くす）川の上流にある温泉。単純泉，84℃。九州電力の地熱発電所が開設されるまでは，小さい温泉旅館があり，近くの大岳地獄からは湯けむりがあがり，付近の水田では飯田（はんだ）高原一帯のための湯苗代がこの温泉水でつくられ，季節にはにぎわっていた。第2次世界大戦後まもなく，地熱発電所候補地となり，1967年九州で最初の地熱発電所(出力1万2500kW)が運転を開始した。地下の深層部から噴出する熱水を利用して発電機を動かすもので，また，熱水から出てくる蒸気で水を温め付近の民家に分湯し入浴などに利用されている。
