A former town in Chikujo District, eastern Fukuoka Prefecture. It faces the Suo Nada Sea and is connected by the Nippo Main Line. Paddy fields are developed in the lowlands of the Kii River basin, producing high-quality rice. Greenhouse cultivation of lettuce, strawberries, and other crops is also popular. Pears, yuzu, and other fruits are produced in the mountainous areas. There is a large camphor tree (a natural monument) in Honjo, and the mountainous area is part of the Yaba Hita Hikosan Quasi-National Park. 福岡県東部,築上郡の旧町。周防(すおう)灘に面し,日豊本線が通じる。城井(きい)川流域の低地に水田が開け,良米を産する。レタス,イチゴなどのハウス栽培も盛ん。山間部ではナシ,ユズなどを産する。本庄に大クス(天然記念物)があり,山地は耶馬日田英彦山(やばひたひこさん)国定公園の一部。2006年1月,築上郡椎田町と合併し町制,築上郡築上町となる。67.64km2。9889人(2003)。
