…Also called the Irish Parliamentary Party or the Home Rule Party. Its predecessor was the Home Rule League, founded in 1873 by Isaac Butt (1813-79). After Butt's death, under Parnell's leadership, the party sent many members to the Westminster Parliament in London (85 seats in 1885), and played a major role in supporting Gladstone and promoting Home Rule. After Parnell's downfall (1890), the party weakened, but was revived under the leadership of John Redmond (1856-1918), who supported Asquith and worked hard to pass the third Home Rule Act in 1914. …
