Charles Dumoulin

French jurist. His Latin name was Carolus Molinaeus. He was born in Paris to an aristocratic family. He studied law at the University of Orléans and taught at the same university in 1521, but the following year he became a lawyer at the Parisian Parlement (the highest court in the country). He was an ardent supporter of the monarchy, and as a Protestant (at one time a Calvinist, later a Lutheran), he not only advocated freedom for the French Church from the Pope, but also sought to subordinate it to the monarchy (Gallicanism). He also opposed feudalism, and sought to unify the laws around Paris customary law by consolidating the various regional customary laws.

フランスの法学者。ラテン名はモリナエウスCarolus Molinaeus。パリで貴族の家柄に生まれる。オルレアン大学で法学を修得，1521年同大学で教鞭をとったが，翌年にはパリのパルルマン(最高法院)で弁護士となる。熱烈な王権支持論者で，プロテスタント(一時カルバン派，のちルター派)として教皇からのフランス教会の自由を主張するにとどまらず，これを王権に従属せしめようとした(ガリカニスム)。また封建制に反対し，地域的に雑多な慣習法を整理してパリ慣習法を中心とする法の統一を目ざした。
