1500‐66 French jurist. His Latin name was Carolus Molinaeus. He was born in Paris to an aristocratic family. He studied law at the University of Orléans and taught at the same university in 1521, but the following year he became a lawyer at the Parisian Parlement (the highest court in the country). He was an ardent supporter of the monarchy, and as a Protestant (at one time a Calvinist, later a Lutheran), he not only advocated freedom for the French Church from the Pope, but also sought to subordinate it to the monarchy (Gallicanism). He also opposed feudalism, and sought to unify the laws around Paris customary law by consolidating the various regional customary laws.
