Afterbirth - Afterbirth
Also known as "nochizan" or "kosan." After the birth of the fetus, the placenta is expelled along with the fetal membrane and remaining umbilical cord. Afterbirth begins 10 to 30 minutes after the birth of the fetus, and usually involves 200 to 400 ml of blood loss. The discharge is commonly called "placenta." The afterbirth is the third stage of labor, and labor is complete at this point.

〈のちざん〉〈こうさん〉とも。胎児分娩(ぶんべん)後,胎盤が卵膜および残存臍帯(さいたい)とともに排出されること。胎児分娩後10〜30分で後産陣痛とともに始まり10〜30分を要し,普通200〜400mlの出血をみる。排出物を俗に〈えな(胞衣)〉という。後産は分娩の第3期に当たり,これをもって分娩は完了する。
