…Initially a local kiln, Bizen kilns expanded production in the period of the Northern and Southern Courts, replacing the Sueki kilns of western Japan, and included the area west of Kinai in its trade. In the 16th century, the kilns were consolidated into three locations, Minamidai, Nishidai, and Kitadai, and production was centralized. During the Edo period, the kilns were monopolized by the six families of potters: Kaneshige, Kimura, Terami, Tonmiya, Okyo, and Mori. Among the medieval kilns other than Seto and Mino, it is known from tea ceremony records from the 16th century that, along with Shigaraki, Bizen was the first to produce wabichiya tea ware.
