Cephonodes hylas (large-winged moth)

Japanese: オオスカシバ(大透翅) - オオスカシバ（英語表記）Cephonodes hylas

An insect of the Lepidoptera family Sphingidae (illustration). This is a small moth in this family, with a span of about 5 cm. Its wings are almost transparent, its body is yellowish-green, and it has black and red bands on its abdomen. When it emerges, its wings are covered with dull scales, but as it hardens and flaps its wings, the scales fall off and it becomes transparent. It is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics from Africa to Australia, and in Japan it is found from Honshu southwards. Adults are diurnal flying moths and fly very actively, and females visit gardenia, the food plant for their larvae, and lay eggs on the leaves and twigs.

鱗翅目スズメガ科の昆虫（イラスト）。この科の中では小型のガで，開張5cm内外。翅はほとんど透明，体は黄緑色，腹部に黒帯と赤帯がある。羽化したときには翅は光沢のない鱗粉に覆われているが，翅が硬化し，細かく羽ばたくと同時に鱗粉が脱落して透明となる。アフリカからオーストラリアまで，熱帯から亜熱帯に広く分布し，日本では本州から南に産する。成虫は昼飛性で，きわめて活発に飛び，雌は幼虫の食草であるクチナシを訪れ，葉や小枝に産卵する。
