Hamburgische Dramaturgie (English spelling)

...It was mainly drama analysis, and rather than a mere performance review, it was primarily a theoretical critique of the entire performance. This tendency was inherited from Roman to Renaissance theater criticism, but in the early modern period, with the establishment of civil society, criticism of older theatrical aesthetics, such as the works of the French Diderot and the German Lessing's Hamburgische Dramaturgie (1767-69), attracted much attention. Thus, pre-modern Western theater criticism was traditionally centered on the performed works, and was systematic and theoretical.
