...a piece of music for one or more solo instruments and an orchestra, with the principle of contrast and harmony between the two, and composed to allow the soloist to demonstrate his or her performance technique to a greater or lesser extent. It was once written as a contest. The original word "concerto" comes from the verb "concertare," which means "to compete" in Latin and "to cooperate" in Italian, and it is unclear which meaning the "concerto" as a musical form comes from.
