A diffuse nebula in the constellation Cygnus. Two nebulae (NGC6992, NGC6960) look like a collection of thin fibers. When these two are combined with other nearby nebulae, they form a huge loop with an apparent diameter of about 3 degrees, several times the apparent size of the moon, and an actual diameter of several tens of light years (1 light year = about 9.46 trillion kilometers). It is called a "net" because it shines like a complex fiber in visible light, but in reality it is a high-temperature gas shell expanding at a high speed of 100 kilometers per second. In fact, when observed with a radio telescope, it can be seen that the entire nebula is spherical. It is thought to be a remnant of a supernova that exploded and scattered about 10,000 years ago, and the light and radio waves are emitted by the fast-expanding shock wave colliding violently with the thin gas in interstellar space.
