…Amateur choirs were born, and many easy-to-understand yet excellent choral pieces were composed for them. The Berliner Liedertafel, a male choir founded in Berlin in 1809 by the German composer and educator Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832), the Orphéon, a male choral association founded in Paris by the French music educator Guillaume Louis Wilhem (1781-1842), and the Glee Clubs founded in England have played a major role in today's choral music. In Japan, glee clubs were founded at Kwansei Gakuin University and Doshisha University in the middle of the Meiji period, and the Wagner Society of Keio University was formed in 1902. University choirs were the main focus, but choirs of like-minded people were born, including the Tokyo Madrigal Society, founded in 1929. …
