Pyrenean mountain dog [breed] (English spelling)

A herding dog and domestic dog originating from Spain. Also called the Great Pyrenees, the name comes from the Pyrenees Mountains on the border between Spain and France. In the Middle Ages, it is said to have been widely used as a herding dog to protect livestock from wolves and bears, as a sentry dog or guard dog at castles and borders, and as a working dog to carry goods for traders across mountainous borders. It is believed that the basis of this dog was the Tibetan Mastiff, but the details are unknown, and it seems to have already existed around the 14th century.

原産地がスペインの牧畜犬，家庭犬。グレート･ピレニーズGreat Pyreneesとも呼ばれ，スペインとフランスの国境地帯のピレネー山脈が名称の起源になっている。中世には家畜の群れをオオカミやクマから守る牧畜犬，城や国境の歩哨犬や警備犬，また貿易商人の荷物を背に負って国境の山地を越える作業犬として幅広く活躍したと伝えられる。このイヌの基礎はチベタン･マスチフであると推察されているが詳細は不明で，14世紀ころにはすでに存在したようである。
