In the 19th century, the influence of French Kardecismo spiritualism appeared, giving black Brazilian religion a stronger occult character. The Macumba are a group that follows this trend, with many of their followers being blacks from the lower classes of cities.

Protestantism has only begun in earnest in the last 100 years, and new sects have been gaining strength especially since the end of World War II. Pentecostalism in particular has gained popularity because it believes that speaking in tongues (glossararia) through the descent of the Holy Spirit is a sign of God's grace, and is said to have gained 1.5 million followers in Brazil in the 1950s.
