Gwala, M.

...The same can be said of writers such as Peter Abrahams (1919-), Mphahlele, and La Guma, who depicted the brutal experiences of apartheid and brought contemporary South African literature onto the world stage. In South Africa, the spirit of resistance and rebellion has been passed down through the lineage of suicide writers such as Can Themba (1924-69) and Nat Nakasa (1937-65), and has been carried on in the works of what might be called urban proletarian literature by Mafika Gwala (1946-), Mtutuzeli Matshoba (1950-), Mbulelo Mzamane (1948-), and others. However, the foundation for this was laid by southern Bantu writers such as Thomas Mofolo (1875-1948) in Sotho, Samuel Mqhayi (1875-1945) in Xhosa, and R. Dhlomo (1901-) in Zulu. Despite church censorship, Mofolo's works such as The Traveler to the East (1906) and Chaka (1925) contain criticism of Christianity, rejection of urban values, and a sense of alienation of Africans.
