This river originates on the eastern slope of Mt. Mikuni in the Ishikari Mountains in northeastern Hokkaido, flows east and north, and empties into the Sea of Okhotsk in the northeastern part of Kitami City. It is a first-class river. Along the way, it merges with the Niitokoro River, Muka River, and Kunneppu River. It is 120 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 1,930 square kilometers. It is the largest river in the Abashiri region. Around the confluence with the Muka River in the middle reaches, it forms the fertile alluvial Kitami Basin, which spreads into farmland and is the northern limit of rice paddies. The alluvial plain inside the coastal sand dunes in the lower reaches is used for field crops and dairy farms. The river water is used for the Kitami region's water supply, industrial water, and irrigation. There is a trout and salmon hatchery near the mouth of the river.
