Sŏl‐ch'ong (English spelling)

Japanese: 薛聡 - せっそう（英語表記）Sŏl‐ch‘ong

A 7th-century scholar from Silla, Korea. Dates of birth and death unknown. His pen name was Soji. He was the son of the famous monk Wonhyo. He was active as a Confucian scholar a little later than Gangshou, and contributed to the assimilation of Chinese learning and the development of Confucianism by compiling a method of expressing the Silla language in Chinese characters (later called Rito), devising a method of interpreting classical Chinese in Silla (To), and lecturing on Buddhist scriptures. He also held the position of Hanlin and later served as a political advisor to the king, and is known to have written the Fuwangshu (Kaokai), in which he exhorted King Shinmun (reigned 681-692) to observe moral standards. His posthumous name was Hongru Hou.

朝鮮，新羅の7世紀の文人。生没年不詳。字は聡智。名僧元暁の子。儒学者として強首にやや遅れて活躍，新羅語を漢字で表す方法(後世の吏読（りと）)を集成し，漢文を新羅語で読み解く方法(吐（と）)を考案して経典を講釈するなど，中国学芸の摂取と儒学の発展に寄与した。また，官職は翰林をへて王の政治顧問役をにない，神文王(在位681‐692)に道徳規範の順守を説いた《諷王書(花王戒)》が伝わる。諡（おくりな）は弘儒侯。
