Lodge, Thomas
[Born] Around 1558
[died] 1625. London English poet, storyteller, and playwright. Son of the Lord Mayor of London, he was one of the "university-educated geniuses." Around 1580, he began his literary career by writing a rebuttal to S. Gosson's attack on theater, but at one point he aspired to be an adventurer and sailed to the Canary Islands and South America, and finally ended his life as a doctor. In addition to the legendary tales Rosalynde and Euphues Golden Legacy (1590), which became the basis for Shakespeare's As You Like It, he also wrote plays The Wounds of Civil War (88), A Looking-Glass for London and England (90), and a collection of love sonnets Phillis (93).
