Akita Hachijo

Japanese:
Akita Hachijo

A plain-weave silk fabric woven in Akita City. It is also called Akita Hachijo Silk. The Lord of Akita, Satake-shi, encouraged Akita silk as one of the measures to promote industry and trade. During the Bunka era (1804-1818), he invited Tadenuma Jinpei from Kiryu to make Tobi Hachijo silk, dyed with the root bark of the rosehip plant. At the end of the Edo period, the market for the specialty product expanded to Edo, Kyoto and Osaka. The heyday was around 1895 (Meiji 28), and now the only Namekawa Weaving Yard that had continued in business since the early Showa period has closed, raising concerns about the succession of the technique. Using mainly rosehip and vegetable dyes, the silk is woven in stripes and checks with unique colors and textures.
