Inspection is conducted to ensure smooth, simple, and fair trading of agricultural and forestry products and processed products on the distribution market. In Japan, inspections are conducted by the Food Agency's Food Office in accordance with the Agricultural Products Inspection Law for the brand, weight, packaging, and quality of 32 items, including rice and wheat (including imported products), miscellaneous grains, potatoes, straw products, hemp, and peppermint, while inspections are conducted by the national and prefectural governments in accordance with the Food Office Request Inspection Regulations for other agricultural and forestry products and processed products. In addition, inspections are also conducted by agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, prefectures, or registered grading organizations recognized by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in accordance with the Law Concerning Standardization and Proper Labeling of Agricultural and Forestry Products. Imported products are inspected based on the Foreign Agricultural Products Inspection Guidelines.

流通市場に出回る農林産物とその加工品の取引の円滑，単純，公正をはかるために行う検査。日本では米麦 (輸入品も含む) ，雑穀，芋類，わら工品，麻類，薄荷など 32品目の銘柄，量目，包装，品位などについて農産物検査法によって国 (食糧庁) の食糧事務所が行い，これ以外の農林産物，加工品については食糧事務所依頼検査規程によって国と都道府県が行なっている。また農林物資の規格化及び品質表示の適正化に関する法律に基づいて農林水産省の機関，都道府県または農林水産大臣の認めた登録格付機関も行なっている。なお，輸入品については，外国産農産物検査要綱に基づいて実施されている。
