Yurii Ivanovich Venelin

A Russian Slavic scholar. His real name was Khutsa. He was from the Carpathian Ukraine. He emigrated to Russia in 1823, graduated from Moscow University in 1829, and studied Bulgarian history and literature. His book, Bulgarians Then and Now (2 volumes, 1829, 41), attracted attention at the time for its assertion that Russians and Bulgarians were of the same ancestry. It had a particularly strong influence on Bulgarian illuminators, and contributed to raising Bulgarian national consciousness. [Nao Hagiwara]
