Marsh crab - Ashiharagani (English name)

This crab belongs to the family Grapsidae, order Decapoda, class Crustacea, phylum Arthropoda. It is endemic to the waters off Japan, distributed from Aomori Prefecture southward, Okinawa, the Korean peninsula, and Taiwan. It inhabits wetlands at river mouths, and is particularly common in reed beds. It has a square shape with a shell width of about 3.5 cm, and a thick body. There are two large teeth and one vestigial tooth behind the external orbital tooth. There are 16-18 granules in males and 30 or so in females, arranged in a row along the infraorbital edge, and they make noise by rubbing them with the ridges on the long segments of the chelicerae. The body is dark blue-green, and the front edge of the shell and the chelicerae are yellowish. Eight species are known from this genus, distributed in Japan, the Korean peninsula, northern China, and Taiwan, and are distinguished mainly by the difference in the sound-producing organs. The small-legged crab, H. wuana , is found in southern Japan, while the leech crab, H. leachii , is common in Okinawa.

節足動物門甲殻綱十脚(じっきゃく)目イワガニ科に属するカニ。青森県以南、沖縄、朝鮮半島、台湾に分布する日本近海の固有種。河口の湿地帯にすみ、アシ原にとくに多い。甲幅3.5センチメートルほどの四角形で、体に厚みがある。眼窩(がんか)外歯の後方に大きな歯が二つ、痕跡(こんせき)的な歯が一つある。眼窩下縁に沿って雄では16～18個、雌では三十数個の顆粒(かりゅう)が1列に並び、はさみ脚(あし)の長節にある稜(りょう)でこすって発音する。体は暗青緑色で、甲の前側縁と、はさみは黄色を帯びている。この属には日本、朝鮮半島、中国北部、台湾から8種が知られ、主として発音器官の違いで区別される。南日本にはヒメアシハラガニH. wuanaがみられ、沖縄にはリーチアシハラガニH. leachiiが多い。
