…He made an important contribution to the development of the classical style. Unlike his older brother Giuseppe S. (1695-1750), an oboist and composer active in London, he spent most of his life as conductor at various churches, including the Church of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan. He was also active in fields other than religious music, and from the late 1720s he wrote independent sinfonias, not overtures to operas, leaving a major mark on the history of the symphony and influencing Haydn and others. …
