…In the 5th century BCE, following on from the lineage of the preceding Hallstatt culture, it began in the area from present-day eastern France to the middle Rhine basin and southern Germany, then spread widely throughout central and western Europe, and continued to exist until the 1st century BCE. It was named after the La Tène ruins on the north shore of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland, where a large number of iron weapons, ornaments, and other artifacts were discovered in 1857. It is believed to be a culture left behind by the Celts, who appear in the records of Greek and Roman classical writers and in Caesar's Gallic Wars. …
