Born: 18 October 1785, Weymouth [Died] January 23, 1866. Halliford British novelist and poet. Father-in-law of Shelley's friend Meredith. Self-taught in classical literature, he worked for the East India Company for many years. His novels Headlong Hall (1816), Nightmare Abbey (18), and Crotchet Castle (31) are satirical works that feature eccentric characters relaxing and engaging in lengthy conversations without any clear plot, satirizing the state of the world and famous people. His other works, Maid Marian (22) and The Misfortunes of Elphin (29), focus on medieval romance. His treatise The Four Ages of Poetry (1920) was what inspired Shelley to write A Defence of Poetry.
