gildi

...It is said to have originated from the German word gelten, which seems to have come from the practice of bringing one's own drinks, especially ale, to a drinking party and paying for one's share. The Old Norse word gildi meant both the drinking party, i.e. the banquet itself, and the organization or association whose sole purpose was to hold a banquet. In Norway, where medieval cities with guilds were not well developed, gildehus (guild house) was not a guild hall, but a rural drinking hall.
