…British Sinologist. From 1880 (the 6th year of the Guangxu era), he served as consul in various parts of China, retiring in 1893, and in 1897 was invited to become professor of Chinese at Cambridge University. Until his retirement in 1932, he received numerous honors as an authority in British Oriental studies. His academic style was moderate, and he had a deep understanding of Chinese thought and life, and he was particularly skilled in translating Chinese poetry and prose. He wrote several hundred books and articles, including the Chinese-English Dictionary (1892) and the Genealogy of Ancient and Modern Family Names (1897). His fourth son, Lionel Giles (1875-1958), became head of the Oriental Department at the British Museum, and was involved in organizing the Dunhuang Chinese manuscripts from Stein's collection, publishing a classified catalogue in 1957. …

…イギリスの中国学者。1880年(光緒6)以来，中国各地の領事を務めて93年に引退し，97年ケンブリッジ大学の中国語教授に招かれた。1932年に引退するまで，イギリス東洋学界の権威として数々の栄誉を受けた。学風は穏健で，中国人の思想や生活を深く理解しており，とくに中国詩文の翻訳にすぐれていた。《中英辞典》(1892)，《古今姓氏族譜》(1897)ほか，数百編の著書，論文がある。四男のライオネル･ジャイルズLionel Giles(1875‐1958)は大英博物館東洋部長となり，スタイン収集の敦煌漢文文献の整理に従事し，1957年その分類目録を出版した。…
