The genus name Gerbera is said to have been named in memory of German scientist T. Gerber. The English name Transvaal daisy comes from the place of origin of the original species, the Transvaal region of South Africa, and the Japanese name Oosenbonyari comes from the fact that it is a large species of the same genus plant Senbonyari native to Japan. G. jamesonii was discovered in the 1870s, and many excellent varieties were born in the 20th century from hybrids that were crossed with G. viridifolia Sch., which is native to South Africa. ...
