〘Noun〙 A type of punishment in the Edo period. It meant hitting the criminal on the shoulders, back, and buttocks 100 times with a whip . In Edo, the prison guards carried out this punishment in front of the prison gates in Kodenmacho. It began during the reign of the eighth shogun, Yoshimune. *Edict Tenpo Shusei-100, March 1794 (Kansei 6): "For the time being, the following punishments are to be imposed on those who gamble: heavy beatings."
