Officially known as the Scottish school of common sense, Reid felt the threat of these consequences to the foundations of philosophy in general, and to the established dogmas of the church in particular, as a result of Berkeley's argument denying matter, that "to be is to be perceived," and Hume's skeptical conclusion that denied the idea of causation. Reid rejected the method of cognition criticism based on "ideas" that had been used by Descartes and Locke. He therefore defended common sense by focusing on the value of instinctive judgments that precede the conscious process of reasoning.

正式にはスコットランド常識哲学学派Scottish school of common senseという。〈存在とは知覚されることである〉とのバークリーによる物質否定の論証や，ヒュームによる因果観念の否定という懐疑的結論によって哲学一般の基盤，とりわけ既成の教会の教義に及ぼすこの種の帰結の脅威を感じたT.リードは，デカルトやロック以来の〈観念〉を軸とする認識批判の方法をしりぞけた。彼はそれゆえに意識的な推論過程に先行する本能的な判断の価値に注目して常識を擁護した。
