In 1848, the Liberty Party merged with anti-slavery elements from the Whig and Democratic parties in the United States to form the third political party. It opposed the creation of new states or territories in the West that permitted slavery, and demanded the free granting of public land to independent farmers. In the 1848 presidential election, it nominated M. Van Buren as its candidate, and adopted the slogan "Free Soil, Free Speech, Free Labor, Free Men." In 1854, it was absorbed into the newly formed Republican Party. [Hirano Takashi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
