Hildebrand's Song - Hildebrandslied

Hildebrand's Song - Hildebrandslied

A fragmentary heroic song of unknown authorship written in Old High German. The surviving manuscript comes from the monastery of Fulda around 800. Written in a simple, powerful style using alliteration, this work is the only one in Old High German that deals with a Germanic hero. Hildebrand, a hero who served King Dietrich of Bern, returns to his homeland after 30 years of wandering, but is prevented from entering the country by Hadbrand, a young warrior on guard at the border. After an argument, a fight is about to begin. Hildebrand asks about Hadbrand's background. Hadbrand proudly states his family background. Hildebrand finds out that the young warrior is his son and tries to avoid the fight. He gives Hadbrand a bracelet and claims to be his father, but the son does not believe him, calling it a trick. A duel inevitably begins, and the fierce swordplay cuts both of their shields into pieces, making them smaller... and this is where the fragment ends, sadly. It is a valuable work that conveys vestiges of ancient German heroic epic poetry in both its theme and depiction.
