Matsudaira Sadamasa

Japanese: 松平定政 - まつだいら・さだまさ
Matsudaira Sadamasa
Year of death: 24th November 1673 (11th January 1673)
Year of birth: 15th year of the Keicho era (1610)
Lord of Kariya Domain in Mikawa in the early Edo period. Noto no Kami. Called Fuhaku. Born in Yamashiro Fushimi as the sixth son of Matsudaira Sadakatsu, the half-brother of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1633 (Kan'ei 10), he became Shogun Iemitsu's Koseki, and the following year was given 5,000 koku and headed the Kosekigumi. In 1639 (Kan'ei 12), he was given the title of Ise Nagashima with 7,000 koku, and in 1640 (Kan'ei 13), he was promoted to Kinjutsu. In 1649 (Keian 2), he was given 20,000 koku of Kariya. When Iemitsu died in April 1650, he suddenly shaved his head in July, returned his territory, submitted a petition criticizing the shogunate, and begged in the city of Edo. The shogunate deemed this the work of madness and entrusted him to his brother, Matsudaira Sadayuki, Lord of Matsuyama Domain in Iyo. This was a symbol of the crisis in the shogunate government immediately after Iemitsu's death, and the Yui Shosetsu Rebellion was discovered shortly after this. Sadamasa was confined to Matsuyama, where he died. <References> Yoshiki Shinji “Masayuki Yui”
