...The handle is therefore characterized by a smooth, slippery finish, without any clumps like the spool of a spear or the hilt of a naginata.It began to be used from the end of the Kamakura period as infantry warfare developed, and by the end of the Muromachi period it had become widely used by both high and low ranks of samurai.In the Edo period it became a symbol of the status of a samurai, and it was always required for the spear bearer to carry it when going out officially.
[Spear body]
A spear consists of a body and a handle, and is called a suyari (plain spear), and usually has a straight body with two blades, and a particularly long one is called an "Oomi no yari." The tip of the body is called the "hosaki," the part that is inserted into the handle is called the "tang," and the boundary between the blade and the tang is called the "kerakubi" or "shiokubi."
