A war fought in 1757 at Plassey, north of Calcutta, between the armies of the British East India Company and the combined forces of France and the Nawab of Bengal. Amid tensions between Britain and France over control of India, in 1756 Siraj-ud-Daulah, a Bengalese prince, received assistance from France and occupied Calcutta, but it was recaptured by the East India Company forces led by Clive in 1757. The two armies then fought a battle at Plassey, and the combined forces of France and the Nawab of Bengal were defeated by the British, who had allied with anti-Siraj generals. This marked the foundation of British rule over India.
