Grammar school

Japanese: グラマー･スクール（英語表記）grammar school

A traditional secondary school in England since the Middle Ages, named after the fact that Latin grammar was the main subject taught there. The background to the emergence of grammar schools was that the Germanic peoples, who did not have a written language, adopted Latin as their official written language. As the demand for intellectuals to play the role of scribes increased from the 11th century, when medieval cities were established, the number of schools teaching Latin increased throughout Europe. After the emergence of universities, these became preparatory schools for learning Latin, which was essential for acquiring specialized knowledge at university, but during the Renaissance, as intellectual interest in the arts and sciences of classical antiquity grew, they also became places to impart culture to the children of the aristocracy and wealthy merchant classes as a symbol of status.

イギリスの中世以来の伝統的中等学校。ラテン語文法を主に教えたのでこの名がある。グラマー･スクール出現の背景には，文字をもたなかったゲルマン民族が書き言葉の公用語としてラテン語を採用したことがある。中世都市の成立期である11世紀以降書記的役割を果たす知識人層への需要が高まるにつれ，ラテン語を教える学校がヨーロッパ各地で増加する。これは大学の出現ののち，大学で専門的知識を学ぶのに必須のラテン語を学ぶ予備学校となるが，ルネサンス期には古典古代の学芸に対する知的関心の高まりとともに，貴族や富裕商人層の子弟にも地位の象徴としての教養を与える場になった。
