Oigawa River

Japanese:
Oigawa River
A river that originates on the eastern edge of the Tanba Highlands in Kyoto Prefecture and merges with the Yodo River. It is 83 km long and has a drainage area of 770 km2 . The area south of the Kameoka Basin is called the Hozu River, and the area south of Arashiyama is called the Katsura River. In ancient times, the area south of Arashiyama was called the Kadono River, and the basin was developed early on, with many ruins and ancient tombs from the Yayoi period. From the 5th century onwards, development was promoted by the Hata clan, who were immigrants and settlers, and the Kadono Weir (Kazuno River Weir) was constructed. In the Middle Ages, the Katsura River Irrigation Canal was excavated to irrigate the manors on both sides of the basin. The abundant water makes it easy to transport goods by water, and after the construction of Heian-kyo, various goods such as black wood and firewood and charcoal were transported from Tanba, and many ports such as Katsurazu and Umezu developed as distribution centers. Umezu in particular was bustling as a lumber port, with many lumberyards. This lively water transport continued into modern times, but after the Hozukyo Gorge was renovated by Ryoi Suminokura at the beginning of the Edo period, it became possible for Takase boats to pass through, and the transport of timber by raft became even more popular. The San'in Main Line runs through the middle part of the river valley.
