A city in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. It is located about 40 km north of Stuttgart, along the Neckar River, a tributary of the Rhine. It was built on the site of a Roman settlement, and first appeared in history in 741, when a castle for the Carolingian dynasty was built. The city was named after the "Holy Spring" (Holy Spring) that was said to have gushed forth from under the altar of the Basilica of Quillian (13th century, expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries), and became a city directly under imperial rule in 1281. Commerce has flourished as a landing point on the Neckar River since ancient times, and even today it is a center of commerce, transportation, and communications. Metalworking and wine production are also distinctive. Population: 122,415 (2010). Heilbronn |
