Miyakobushi

Japanese:
Miyakobushi
A term used in Japanese music by Uehara Rokushiro in his book Zokugaku Senritsu Ko (Thoughts on Folk Music), it refers to the scales used mainly in urban music of the early modern period. He argued that Japanese scales are pentatonic and divided into two types: Miyako-bushi and Inaka-bushi (scales used in folk songs, etc.), naming the former as Yinsen and the latter as Yangsen. Later, Koizumi Fumio focused on the existence of tetrachords in the perfect fourth frame, and revealed that there are four types of tetrachords depending on the position of the middle note: Minyo, Ritsu, Miyako-bushi, and Okinawa. He also clarified that the Miyako-bushi tetrachord is the one that often appears in early modern Japanese music, and that the Miyako-bushi scale is formed by combining them.
