1806‐49 A Hungarian landowner and aristocrat, and a liberal politician. From the late 1830s he led the anti-government party in the Senate. He was the Prime Minister of Hungary's first responsible government, which was formed on March 17 as a result of the 1848 Revolution. He attempted to conclude a peace agreement with Vienna in order to protect the country's independence, but failed, and resigned on October 2. At the end of December, he negotiated with Austria as the representative of the Hungarian government, but was arrested in Pest by the Austrian imperial army on January 8, 1849, and was executed in October.
