Oigawa - Oigawa

Japanese: 大井川 - おおいがわ

This river originates south of Mt. Shirane in the Akaishi Mountains, flows south through central Shizuoka Prefecture, and empties into Suruga Bay. It is 168 km long and has a drainage area of 1,280 ^km2 . It is one of the fastest rivers in Japan, and its upstream meanders carve deep gorges. It joins the Sumata River near Senzu, Kawane Town, and forms an alluvial fan near Shimada City. The Hatanagi Dam, Ikawa Dam, and Okuizumi Dam were constructed upstream, and artificial lakes appeared in various places. Four ferries have been installed since the Heian period, and are recorded in the Kaido-ki and other books in the Middle Ages. In the Edo period, the shogunate prohibited bridges and ferries as the river was a key point on the Tokaido, so travelers crossed the river between Shimada and Kanaya on the shoulders of Kawagoe porters or in palanquins (Kawagoe).

赤石山脈の白根山の南に発し，静岡県中部を南流して駿河湾に注ぐ川。長さ168km，流域面積1280km²。日本屈指の急流で，上流は深い峡谷を刻んで曲流。川根本町千頭(せんず)付近で寸又(すまた)川と合流，島田市付近から扇状地を形成する。上流に畑薙(はたなぎ)ダム，井川ダム，奥泉ダムなどが建設され，各所に人造湖が出現。平安期より渡船４艘が置かれ，中世には《海道記》などに記されている。江戸時代，東海道の要衝として幕府が橋や渡船を禁じたため，旅行者は島田〜金谷の間を川越人足の肩や，輦台(れんだい)に乗って川を渡った（川越(かわごし)）。
