This river originates south of Mt. Shirane in the Akaishi Mountains, flows south through central Shizuoka Prefecture, and empties into Suruga Bay. It is 168 km long and has a drainage area of 1,280 km2 . It is one of the fastest rivers in Japan, and its upstream meanders carve deep gorges. It joins the Sumata River near Senzu, Kawane Town, and forms an alluvial fan near Shimada City. The Hatanagi Dam, Ikawa Dam, and Okuizumi Dam were constructed upstream, and artificial lakes appeared in various places. Four ferries have been installed since the Heian period, and are recorded in the Kaido-ki and other books in the Middle Ages. In the Edo period, the shogunate prohibited bridges and ferries as the river was a key point on the Tokaido, so travelers crossed the river between Shimada and Kanaya on the shoulders of Kawagoe porters or in palanquins (Kawagoe). → Related topics Akaishi-dake | Oigawa [town] | Kanaya [town] | Kawadome | Kawane [town] | Shizuoka [prefecture] | Shizuoka [city] | Shimada [city] | Sunomatakyo | Nakakawane [town] | Notori-dake | Fujieda [city] | Honkawane [town] | Makinohara | Yaizu [city] | Yoshida [town] | Koshidai Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
