…The Society for the Study of Poetic Language was founded in Petrograd, Russia, around 1916. It was a group that played a part in the Russian Formalist critical movement based on poetics and linguistics. Its members included VB Shklovsky, BM Eichenbaum, Yu.N. Tynyanov, LP Yakubinskii (1892-1945), and ED Polivanov (1891-1938). While connected to the Futurist art movement, it rejected traditional criticism that reduced literary works to non-literary elements, asserted the autonomy of literature, and aimed to establish a science of literature.
