...However, Saussure's theory was initially dismissed as extreme, and only a few people in Europe and the United States positively evaluated it. One such person was Sergei O. Kartsevskii (1884-1955) of the Moscow Linguistic Circle, who studied in Geneva. Through him, NS Trubetskoi and R. Jakobson learned of Saussure's theory in Moscow, and in 1926, they founded the Prague Linguistic School, where they began to construct a theory of phonology as an extension of Saussure's theory. This marked the beginning of structural linguistics and the evaluation of Saussure in Europe.

Meanwhile, in the United States at this time, the development of cultural anthropological research into American Indian tribes called for objective methods that did not rely on traditional grammar to describe their languages.
