Also called constrained motion. The motion of an object under consideration is restricted by other objects. Examples include an object sliding down a fixed slope, like a luge sliding down an ice course, or a top where one point on the object is fixed. Furthermore, the motion of gas molecules trapped in a box is a more general example of constrained motion. In such cases, physics (mechanics) requires solving Newton's equations of motion under the constraints. In general, constraints are classified into those that are given by equations (relationships) related to the object's position coordinates, and those that are not. In the former case, the object's degrees of freedom are reduced by the number of equations. For example, when an object slides down a smooth slope, the motion perpendicular to the slope is frozen. In other words, the sum of the forces acting in the perpendicular direction is zero. This indicates that the vertical component of gravity and the reaction from the slope are balanced. Therefore, the constraints are expressed as the reaction from the slope perpendicular to the slope. In the latter case, that is, when the constraint conditions are given as inequalities between position coordinates, it is often not easy to solve the problem, because the forces that other objects exert on the object under consideration (called constraint forces) are often not given in advance.

拘束運動ともいう。着目している物体が、他の物体によって制限を受けて行う運動のこと。氷でできたコースを滑り降りるリュージュ（そり）のように決められた斜面上を物体が滑り降りる場合や、こまのように物体中の1点が固定された運動などがその例である。さらに、箱の中に閉じ込められた気体分子の運動などは、より一般的な束縛運動の例である。このような場合、物理学（力学）では、ニュートンの運動方程式を束縛条件のもとで解くことが必要になる。一般に束縛条件は、物体の位置座標に関する関係式（等式）で与えられる場合と、そうでない場合とに分類される。前者では、物体の自由度がその条件式の数だけ減ることになる。たとえば、物体が滑らかな斜面を滑り降りる場合がそうで、斜面に垂直方向の運動が凍結されている。すなわち垂直方向に働く力の総和はゼロである。これは重力の垂直成分と斜面からの反作用がつり合っていることを示す。したがって、束縛条件は、斜面に垂直な、斜面からの反作用として表現される。後者の場合は、すなわち、束縛条件が位置座標間の不等式で与えられたりする場合は、簡単に解けないことが多い。その原因は、他の物体の、着目している物体に及ぼす力（束縛力とよばれる）が多くの場合あらかじめ与えられないからである。
