A mountain range in the southwest of Hokkaido, on the west side of the base of the Oshima Peninsula. Facing the Sea of Japan, it is on the border between the Hiyama Subprefectural Office and the Shiribeshi Subprefectural Office. The main peak is Mt. Kariba (1,520 meters), and the range includes Mt. Kasube, Mt. Meppu, Mt. Fumonnai, Mt. Okotsunai, Mt. Maeyama, and Mt. Kujira. Most of the range is made of andesite, with some parts being metamorphic andesite. It has been dissected by the Sutsuki River, Chiwase River, and Odanishi River. Where this mountain range faces the Sea of Japan is Cape Motta, with steep cliffs several tens of meters high, which was once feared by sailors as one of the three most dangerous capes in Ezo. Currently, National Route 229 runs along the coastline, but the Motsuta Tunnel (1,974 meters) that passes through the cape took 16 years to build, and was opened in 1976. The area belongs to Kariba Motsuta Prefectural Natural Park, and among the beech, Erman's birch, and pumila trees there are flower fields of alpine plants such as yellow rhododendron, Siberian daylily, and Chishima ginseng.
