Marie Under

Japanese: ウンテル(英語表記)Marie Under
Marie Under
1883‐1980
An Estonian female poet. Born in Heithenmaa in western Estonia, she studied in Tallinn. She defected to Sweden in 1944 and lived in Stockholm. "Sonnet" (1917) blends tenderness and resignation with a feminine sensibility, while "Voice of the Shadow" (1927) and "Stone from the Heart" (1935) depict the conflict between the two aspects of life, light and darkness, and her post-exile work "Frontier" (1963) is filled with contemplation and longing for home.
