Aomi [town] - Oumi

Japanese: 青海[町] - おうみ

An old town in Nishikubiki County, in the southwestern tip of Niigata Prefecture. Facing the Sea of Japan, the mountains close in on the sea, forming the cliffs of Oyashirazu, and the Hokuriku Main Line and Hokuriku Expressway run along the coast. The town was a post town on the Hokuriku Highway in the early modern period, and in 1921 factories making calcium carbonate nitrate and other products were established using the limestone in the southern mountains, resulting in rapid development. Mining and industry are the main industries in the town. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Noe Town, Nishikubiki County, and Itoigawa City. ^{129.13 km2} . Population: 10,033 (2003).

新潟県南西端，西頸城(にしくびき)郡の旧町。日本海に面し，山地が海に迫って親不知(おやしらず)の断崖をなし，海岸沿いに北陸本線，北陸自動車道が通じる。中心は近世北陸街道の宿場町で，1921年南部の山地の石灰岩を利用して石灰窒素などの工場が立地して急速に発展，鉱工業が中心となっている。2005年３月西頸城郡能生町と糸魚川市へ編入。129.13km²。１万33人（2003）。
