Year of death: September 7, 1614 (October 10, 1614) Year of birth: Tenbun 15 (1546) A tea ceremony practitioner in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. Son of Miya Ozaburo, a small drum player from Sakai, and Soon (later Sen no Rikyu's second wife). His wife was Rikyu's daughter Kame (according to one theory), and father of Sotan and Yamashina Soho. Commonly known as Yoshibei, his Buddhist name was Sojun. After Rikyu's death, he was tasked with reviving the Sen family, and raised Sotan to be an outstanding tea master of the wabi style, contributing to the perfection of the Sen family's tea ceremony. His father died at the age of eight, and he and his mother Soon were taken under Rikyu's protection. Around 1580 (Tensho 8), he lived in front of the Daitoku-ji temple gates and became independent as a tea ceremony practitioner. After Rikyu committed suicide, he sought refuge with Gamo Ujisato of Aizu, and was pardoned in 1594 (Bunroku 3). During this time, he built the teahouse Rinkaku (Aizu-Wakamatsu City). He returned to Kyoto and, as the successor to the Sen family, restored Rikyu's residence in front of Honpo-ji temple. After handing over the family headship to Sotan, he is thought to have built Shonan-tei (Saiho-ji Temple, Kyoto) and retired. His grave is at Juko-in Temple, Daitoku-ji Temple. <References> "Sakai City History"; "Shoan Sojun Koji" edited by Kyoan (Toda Katsuhisa) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
