〘Noun〙 (also "Daikuuji") 1. Before the Meiji period, the chief priest of Ise, Usa, Atsuta, Kashima, Katori, Aso, Kashii, Munakata, and other shrines. Daiguji. *Engishiki (927), vol. 4 "There are two Daiguji. One Daiguji is a senior sixth rank officer. One Shoguji is a senior seventh rank officer." 2. An official placed at Ise Shrine and official Kokuhei Taisha shrines by a proclamation from the Dajokan in 1871 ( Meiji 4 ). At the shrines, they are second only to the chief priest, and are equivalent to the fifth rank. At official Kokuhei Taisha shrines, they are called chief priests, and are equivalent to the sixth rank. Abolished in 1877. 3. One of the officials of the Jingu Office. They served in rituals under the orders of the chief priest. 〘名〙 (「だいくうじ」とも)① 明治以前、伊勢・宇佐・熱田・鹿島・香取・阿蘇・香椎・宗像(むなかた)などの神宮・神社の長官。だいぐじ。※延喜式(927)四「凡太神宮司二員。大宮司一員正六位上官。少宮司一員正七位上官」② 明治四年(一八七一)の太政官布告によって伊勢神宮および官国幣大社に置かれた職員。神宮では祭主の次位で正五位相当。官国幣大社では長官の称で正六位相当。明治一〇年廃制。③ 神宮司庁の職員の一つ。祭主の命を受けて祭祀に奉仕した。内務大臣の監督を受けて職員の統率、事務の管理をした勅任官。
