1350‐1425 Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 1391-1425. Co-emperor with his father John V from 1373. The empire had been under Ottoman Turkish control since 1370. To break this, the emperor tried to obtain military aid from the West, but failed. A revival of the literary and artistic movement was also started in Mystras, centered around the philosopher Plethon, but after the defeat of Christian countries in the Battle of Nicopolis (1396), the siege by the Ottoman Turks eased for a time when Timur invaded Anatolia, but the pressure continued to grow.
